Pterygium

Pterygium

Pterygium is a growth of fleshy tissue that may have started as a Pinguecula. If it remains small, no treatment is needed. If it grows large enough to cover a part of your cornea, your vision may be affected.

Pterygium growths are believed to be caused by having dry eyes, or from exposure to wind, dust, and ultraviolet(UV) light from the sun.

Your Ophthalmologist can treat any swelling or discomfort with lubricating or steroid eye drops.

Surgery can be done to remove your Pterygium if it grows large enough. Once it is removed, your Ophthalmologist may transplant a thin piece of tissue from under your eyelid onto the affected area. This helps reduce the chance that your Pterygium will grow back.
