Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a problem with your retina. The problem occurs when a part of the retina called the Macular is damaged. With AMD, you lose your central vision and you cannot see fine details. AMD is very common and is the leading cause of vision loss in people 50 and over.

There are two types of AMD: Dry AMD and Wet AMD. Dry AMD is the most common form. Dry AMD occurs when parts of the Macular get thinner with age. There is no way to treat dry AMD yet.

Wet AMD is less common but more serious. Abnormal blood vessels grow under your retina. These vessels may leak blood or other fluids, causing scarring of the Macular. You lose vision faster with Wet AMD.

Most people don't notice they have AMD until their vision blurs which is why regular eye examinations are imperative.

Wet AMD can be treated with medication given by injections to your eye to help reduce the number of abnormal blood vessels in your retina. Your eye surgeon may suggest Laser surgery. A laser light beam is shone on the blood vessels in your eyes reducing their number and slowing their leaking.
