Nearsightedness

Nearsightedness (Myopia)

Nearsightedness or Myopia is a very common condition in which you cannot see objects far away from you clearly, but you can see objects close to you. This occurs when the shape of your eye causes light rays to bend incorrectly, focusing images in front of your retina instead of ON your retina.

A simple eye exam can show if you are nearsighted. Eyeglasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery can usually correct this problem.

LASIK surgery is the most common surgery for this issue. Your eye surgeon uses a laser to create a thin flap on the top layer of your cornea, then sculpts the cornea with another laser.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)is another laser surgery that is an option. During this procedure, your surgeon uses a laser to sculpt the middle layer of your cornea, flattening it to let light rays focus closer to or on your retina.
