How does LASIK work?
LASIK is the most commonly performed refractive surgery procedure. You may hear people calling it "LASIX,"
but the name is actually short for "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis."
Why is it so popular? LASIK has
advantages over other procedures, including a relative lack of pain afterward and the fact that good vision
is usually achieved almost immediately, or at least by the very next day.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted Stromal In-situ Keratomileusis) is a popular refractive surgery procedure used to treat
patients suffering from myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.
The procedure is a
combination of keratomileusis, which involves cutting of the cornea, and Excimer laser photoablation, which uses a
laser to reshape the surface of the eye.
The cool ultraviolet beam of the laser delivers a preprogrammed number of
pulses to correct and reshape the exposed surface of the eye. The corneal flap is then put back into place where it
heals without the need for stitches.

map of the patient’s entire visual track is created. Like a fingerprint, this map is completely
unique to each individual.
The information on the map is then transferred into the laser and used
