Cataracts

A Cataract is a progressive clouding of the eye's natural lens that interferes with light passing through to the retina. Sufferers usually describe the condition as being similar to looking through a piece of wax paper, with a gradual blurring or dimming of vision.

Reading may become more difficult and driving a car can actually become dangerous. Cataract sufferers may also be troubled by a bothersome glare, halos around lights, or even double vision.

As the Cataract becomes worse, frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions may become necessary.

Currently, there is no medical treatment to reverse or prevent the development of Cataracts. Once they form, the only way to achieve clear vision again is to physically remove the Cataract from inside the eye and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

Many of the steps of Cataract surgery that are traditionally performed using handheld instruments can now be completed using the precision of a laser.

Your surgeon can use the laser to soften the hard Cataract. Softening the lens with our CATALYS® Laser enables your surgeon to remove the Cataract gently. Cataract surgery usually takes less than 30 minutes and your sight may continue to improve for several days or weeks after surgery.

For people with Cataracts and Astigmatism, surgery is available to correct both issues at once! Your eye surgeon may recommend a toric IOL that replaces the eye's natural lens, and helps correct astigmatism at the same time.

Sometimes, YAG Laser surgery or Posterior Capsulotomy is needed to improve your vision after Cataract surgery. These are  simple and common procedures performed and are generally safe.

YAG Laser surgery is used to tweak results and clear any clouding of your lens that may occur after your Cataract surgery.

With Posterior Capsulotomy, a laser is used to make an opening in the cloudy lens which allows light to pass through again for clear vision.

Your Ophthalmologist will choose which procedure is right for you.
